The main programme for the Senior Section is Look Wider. This is a
personal development programme split into 8 parts, called Octants. The
Octants are: When working on an Octant, members complete a selection of challenges, 3
small challenges, 1 intermediate challenge and 1 major challenge. Upon
completing 5 challenges, the Senior Section member receives an Octant
Certificate. If she completes the small and intermediate challenges from
all 8 Octants, the member achieves the Chief Guide's Challenge Award.
There are lots more opportunities on offer in the Senior Section, from taking
on a leadership role with a group of younger girls to travelling abroad or
undertaking awards such as the Queen's Guide Award or the Duke of Edinburgh's
Award.
See Girlguiding UK's Senior Section
Website for more about the Senior Section.
Burghley District Look Wider Group works on the
Look Wider Scheme - including the Octants, and the Leadership Qualification - as
a group, supporting each other with the activities chosen. As one member once
said, "BDLWG is not just members of a Guiding group, we're like a big family who
support each other where we can!" (She nearly made us cry when she said it!)
BDLWG meets once a fortnight at each others houses (no rent!!) for 2 hours on a
Wednesday evening and pay £10 per year in subs. Some members also see each other
at other Guiding events and unit meetings. Those with Internet access also e
mail frequently!
Our emphasis is very much on fun. We quite often decide on an activity
and then fit it into the schemes...!
